Rowdy but good-natured, Drunk Bus is unafraid to go where many an indie dramedy has gone before. Charlie Tahan (TV's Ozark) stars as Michael, the driver of a frequently drunk and disorderly late-night campus bus. Michael is stuck in a rut, until he's introduced to his new security guy, Pineapple (Pineapple Tangaroa), a Samoan man-mountain, who teaches Michael to connect with his inner feelings. Debut feature directors John Carlucci and Brandon LaGanke craft a familiar odd-couple dynamic but throw in enough detours to keep things fresh. There is bad behaviour, a handful of gross-out moments and the unauthorised use of a traffic cone. Tahan makes a likeable "stuck" 20-something, but the revelation is Tangaroa, a non-professional actor and friend of the film-makers who passes muster as both a plausible heavy and as a highway guru. Though a well-travelled journey, this is a big-hearted and fun film that's well worth flagging down.
