A star rating of 4 out of 5.

With hints of Carrie, this art house slasher from Carlota Pereda expands on the Spanish writer/director's own award-winning 2018 short film of the same name. Village butcher's assistant and plus-size teenager Sara (a captivating Laura Galán) is bullied both at home by her mother and at school by the mean girls. After one vile bout of swimming pool mockery, her tormentors are kidnapped. Sara witnesses it all but stays quiet because she sees the abductor as her guardian angel. For the first time she feels empowerment - even though her silence leads to a twisted bloodbath. Pereda pulls no punches on the stark humour or graphic violence fronts, while also suggesting that verbal abuse and relentless body shaming is sometimes worse than brutal carnage. Sara's awkward dance with danger makes for fascinating viewing, while delivering potent shocks aplenty.
