This comedy sequel takes place 30 years after the events of the first film, with Eddie Murphy's African prince returning to the US to investigate claims he fathered an illegitimate son in the 1980s. Fearing a disruption in the line of succession (he has three daughters in the fictional Zamunda), he and faithful adviser Arsenio Hall revisit the New York stomping grounds of their younger days, where they find several familiar faces from their fish-out-of-water first trip. While the succession subplot does its best to redress the dated gender politics of the original film, it gets lost in the parade of broad, simplistic gags that only intermittently land with any confidence. Co-written by Kenya Barris, creator of the award-winning US TV sitcom Black-ish, the script goes for too many lazy options, and the woefully few louder laughs come courtesy of Murphy's semi-improvised secondary characters - his lead singer of a struggling soul band called Sexual Chocolate deserves a movie of his own.
