Summary

Superhero action adventure starring Tom Holland, Samuel L Jackson, Jake Gyllenhaal and Zendaya. After one cosmic calamity too many, Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man, would rather enjoy teenage life than fight crime - much to the chagrin of Avengers founder Nick Fury. When Peter and pals fly to Europe for the summer, they encounter a savage monster and are saved by scientist Quentin Beck, aka Mysterio. But can they really trust him?

Tom Holland is back in the red-and-blue lycra, and this time his friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man is spinning webs across Europe on a school trip, reluctantly righting wrongs when he'd rather be romancing cool classmate MJ (Zendaya). Aided by new superhero Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) and spurred on by short-fused SHIELD boss Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson), he's called upon to neutralise threats from bizarre shape-shifting giants known as elementals - but are the foes all that they seem? A joke-filled script and jaw-dropping effects tick the usual Marvel Cinematic Universe boxes, although this solo sequel feels a little by-the-book when held up to the fresher, more fully rounded fun of 2017's Spider-Man: Homecoming. The perpetually boyish Holland reasserts his claim to be the most satisfying actor to play the extraordinarily agile vanquisher of villainy, but this adventure has the feeling of a gap-year detour for a superhero who's better suited to leaping into action nearer his own back yard.
