Francis Ford Coppola writes and directs this flawed but fascinating sci-fi drama, a comment on contemporary America that embroils everything from Roman politics to Shakespeare. Set in the near-future in the decaying New Rome, the film follows Cesar Catilina (Adam Driver), an architect who wants to build "a city the people can dream about". With a curious ability to control time, he faces opposition from scheming enemies, including Giancarlo Esposito's mayor, Jon Voight's tycoon, and Shia LaBeouf's hedonistic agitator. With its characters talking in speeches, quoting scholars and poets, the film's rarefied style takes some getting used to. However, there are moments of real innovation, including a sequence of live interactive theatre. The performances see-saw between Driver's dour turn and LaBeouf's over-the-top flamboyance. But for all the wayward elements, it's impossible to deny that Coppola - like Cesar - is an artist pursuing a grand vision. As a whole, Megalopolis doesn't entirely work, but you have to admire the bravery.
