Director Euros Lyn follows his winning Dream Horse with a fitfully witty but messier mix of domestic horror comedy and coming-of-age drama, adapted from Matt Haig's YA novel. Rowan (Harry Baxendale) and Clara Radley (Bo Bragason) are "pale" teenage outsiders, living in leafy England. When an attack on Clara awakens her feral rage, their parents (Kelly Macdonald, Damian Lewis) reveal the family secret: they're abstinent vampires, blending into middle-class society. But will the children agree to repress their urges? After a slow set-up, Lyn merges curtain-twitching suburban paranoia with offbeat family dynamics to droll effect. Among the appealing cast, Lewis has fun with the dual roles of the father - forever struggling to quell his appetites - and his wayward twin. Yet while Rowan's sexual awakening adds emotional weight, Clara's story and other subplots wind up lost in a crowded spread of addiction metaphors, shock confessions and more. As the tone lurches from deadpan fun to darker developments, The Radleys ultimately bites off more than it can chew.
