Jeremy Aspinall
Maggie Gyllenhaal's second film as directoris a bold re-imagining of 1935 masterpiece Bride of Frankenstein. Relocating the tale to 1930s Chicago, it finds the lonely, long-lived Monster - known as "Frank" (a suitably stitched-and-stapled Christian Bale) - recruiting a scientist (Annette Bening) to create a mate just like him. The pair opt to use a deceased gangster's moll (Jessie Buckley), whose "reinvigoration" into an amnesiac free spirit charms mopey Frank and ignites a Bonnie and Clyde-style joyride across America with cops in pursuit. Buckley is mesmerising, recalling original Bride Elsa Lanchester with her perma-shocked hair, and has a ball dovetailing wildly between brassy broad, riot girl and the spectre of Mary Shelley. Meanwhile, Bale channels Boris Karloff's iconic Monster to give a restrained, sympathetic performance as a patchwork Romeo who would rather woo than wound. Gyllenhaal's juggling of ghostly possession, love story and horror while incorporating playful nods to 30s song-and-dance musicals (featuring her brother Jake) is admirably ambitious. But though visually sumptuous, her attempt to sew these elements together with a subplot involving the Chicago Mob and a dogged detective duo only diverts from a captivating cross-country courtship.
