An American social programme that reconnects imprisoned fathers with their daughters forms the basis of this remarkable documentary. The film follows four families around the Washington DC area as the men and girls discuss their regrets, fears and wishes surrounding a planned prom-style event to be held within the prison. The 2019 "Date with Dad" dance itself is then chronicled at length in a strongly moving sequence that carefully threads together the emotional stakes observed in the first act. Finally, the film-makers show us what became of these eight people following the prom. This extended aftermath is as hopeful as it is bleak, with a range of different outcomes on display that solidify the film's observations of the US prison system and the frustrating legal vagaries that punish not only the inmates but their loved ones, too. This does make it increasingly painful to watch, but the work that directors Angela Patton (who helped found the programme) and Natalie Rae clearly put in to connect with their participants pays dividends. This is a tender but clear-eyed study in time lost, lives inhibited and the small gestures of love and community that may well begin to make a change.
