Summary

Born and raised in Ontario, Martin Short finessed his comic timing as a cast member on Saturday Night Live before he starred in beloved films of the 1980s and 1990s including Three Amigos, Innerspace, Three Fugitives, Father Of The Bride and its sequel. More recently, he has enjoyed a career renaissance acting alongside Steve Martin and Selena Gomez in the TV series Only Murders In The Building. Lawrence Kasdan, who directed Short in the 1999 comedy Mumford, helms a feature-length biographical documentary to reveal the complex man behind the screen personae. Exclusive interviews with friends and colleagues including Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg are juxtaposed with previously unseen archive footage from Short's long and illustrious career on stage and screen

"Wellover 90% of my career was a total and utter commercial failure," says Martin Short in this good-natured documentary. You may not have realised just how many of his movies failed at the box office: from 1986's Three Amigos! to 2023's Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, Short sure can pick a loser. But perhaps that's because he only has one question before signing on for a role: would he enjoy hanging out on set? Fittingly, if there's anything to be learnt here, it's that hanging with Marty is everything. Home movies from parties he's hosted over the years reveal a staggering array of famous pals, many interviewed on camera: Spielberg, Hanks, Catherine O'Hara, his Only Murders in the Building co-star Steve Martin... Even the film's director, Lawrence Kasdan, has been Short's friend for decades. (Three amigos? More like millions.) And so, unsurprisingly, this is a shameless hagiography devoid of scandal and controversy, in which nobody has a bad word to say about its beaming subject. But it all feels perfectly earned, and makes for a joyful watch besides.
