Summary

For his ninth feature, French director Jacques Audiard (A Prophet, The Sisters Brothers) teases out fresh, modern and intimate variations on the theme of love in Paris. Alongside co-writers Céline Sciamma and Léa Mysius, Audiard works from graphic novelist Adrian Tomine's stories to craft a searching, comic-dramatic tapestry of millennial yearnings, set around the titular arrondissement. When Émilie (Lucie Zhang) begins sleeping with flatmate Camille (Makita Samba), their romantic expectations clash. Meanwhile, reserved law student Nora (Noémie Merlant) connects with online sex worker "Amber Sweet" (Jehnny Beth), with revelatory results. While the developing links between these strands can seem contrived, the emotion resonates. As the characters drift between sex and laptop screens, the leads keenly evoke their contradictory impulses, with the charismatic Beth (known as the singer of post-punk rockers Savages) perfectly cast. A piquant study of the complexities of desire gradually emerges from the concrete environs, which Audiard navigates with soul and in monochrome style.
