Summary

After the huge success of Paramount's first two live action Sonic films, this third instalment from regular director Jeff Fowler knows exactly what it's doing. Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz) and fellow animated critters Tails (Colleen O'Shaughnessey) and Knuckles (Idris Elba) are living peacefully with their human pals (James Marsden and Tika Sumpter). But, before you can say "celebrity vocal appearance," they're tasked with taking down a new villain. Dark-furred baddie Shadow is voiced by Keanu Reeves, although his vocals are so restrained that his hedgehog could be voiced by anyone, really. As Shadow causes havoc, Sonic must team with former foe Dr Robotnik to save the day. Jim Carrey, as always, has the time of his life as the moustachioed lunatic; this time he also plays Robotnik's grandfather ("It's as if we're two characters in a movie, being played by the same actor!"). The CG action never stops. Carrey is a law unto himself. It's a smidge too long. But the quips are more hit than miss and it all, somehow, works.
