Terry Staunton

Mythical creatures turn menacing in this comedy horror when lawyer Paul Rudd and his daughter Jenna Ortega run over a unicorn on their way to a weekend retreat at Dad's boss's country pile. They bundle the beast into their car before completing their journey, but chaos ensues when they reach their destination and others present discover the cargo, setting off a sequence of events that puts everyone's lives in danger. Writer/director Alex Scharfman gleefully stirs a pot brimming with increasingly incredulous twists, but these are ultimately detrimental to the smooth flow of a narrative that's unsure which path to follow. Nods to bygone horrors, siege movies and slapstick are punctuated by witty dialogue, but subtexts of ambition, greed and loyalty struggle to convince. Nonetheless, the haphazardness of the whole can be at least partially forgiven by the strength of the performances. Rudd and Ortega share an attractive comedy dynamic, while Richard E Grant is a maniacal hoot as the former's employer, ably supported by Téa Leoni and Will Poulter as his entitled wife and son.
