Two strong leads hold the attention throughout one too many forced twists in this stagey but layered mystery thriller of resentment and revenge. Naomie Harris stars as Heather, a well-to-do Londoner living with a neglectful husband. Frustrated, Heather extends a proposal to her estranged former school friend Carla (Natalie Dormer), who works in a supermarket: would Carla kill Heather's spouse for £50,000? The offer opens up a wasp's nest of tensions between the women, which escalate when Carla visits Heather's home. Secrets, jealousies and long-buried truths emerge, with director Guillem Morales (Julia's Eyes) making well-paced work of the many rug-pulls and revelations in Morgan Lloyd Malcolm's script, adapted from her own play. These convolutions can feel laboured, as can Malcolm's supply of insect metaphors, though there's enough psychological tension here to intrigue. As themes of class, race and lingering trauma surface, Harris and Dormer bring conviction and ferocity to this contained exercise in contrasts and cold enmity.
