Stephen Applebaum

Insightfully written by Dana Idisis (TV's On the Spectrum) and sensitively directed by the Israeli film-maker Nir Bergman, this drama convinces on every level, from the profound chemistry between its leads to its authentic, cliché-free portrayal of autism. Aharon (Shai Avivi) and his autistic son, Uri (Noam Imber), live what seems like a perfect life together. Aharon's ex-wife, however, thinks it's time for Uri to move into a home where he can be with people his own age, and has won a court order to make it happen. Convinced that only he can give their son the love and care he needs, Aharon takes flight with him, leading to revelatory encounters with people from his past. Avivi's performance is a masterclass in understatement and quiet power, while Imber's absolute conviction strikingly erases the line between performer and character. Nothing feels forced or false, and when tears flow at the end, they're fully earned. An unmissable gem.
