Summary

Set during the post-American Civil War era in the Great Plains territories, this brutal revisionist western begins with a narrator explaining that a Cheyenne curse has been placed on taciturn ex-soldier Isaac LeMay (Sam Worthington). According to prophecy, he will be killed by one of his offspring, so Isaac sets out to track down and eliminate his own children, one by one. Among them is Cal (Colson Baker, aka Machine Gun Kelly), a bank-robbing outlaw with no qualms about taking lives. Divided into five chapters, director Tim Sutton's supernaturally freighted film is very much in the tradition of the early 1970s "mud and rags" westerns. Made during the Covid pandemic, it struggles to balance its quieter, more reflective moments with the many outbursts of violence. However, the performances are great and the film impresses on a technical level, its menacing score and the widescreen compositions of wintry landscapes both having impact.
