Summary
Biographical drama starring Cailee Spaeny and Jacob Elordi. In 1959 West Germany, 14-year-old American Priscilla Beaulieu meets rock 'n' roll superstar Elvis Presley, who is approaching the end of his military service. Despite her parents' concerns, the two eventually embark on a romantic relationship - but this is far from a fairy-tale ending for the naive schoolgirl.

The Elvis Presley story is seen through the eyes of the woman who knew him best in Sofia Coppola's delicate, sensitive biopic. Based on Priscilla Presley's memoir Elvis and Me, the film begins in 1959, when Elvis (Jacob Elordi) is in West Germany for his military service. There, he meets Priscilla (Cailee Spaeny), still in her mid-teens, and so begins their romance. She eventually persuades her parents to let her move to Memphis, and into Elvis' Graceland home, while she finishes school. As she traces their relationship, Coppola doesn't flinch from the uglier side of Elvis's behaviour, showing violence and even sexual abuse. While the Presley estate denied access to his songs, it scarcely matters, with Elordi nailing the voice and swagger of the King of Rock 'n' Roll. Spaeny also convincingly essays Priscilla, from naive schoolgirl to a woman buffeted by a media hurricane. The final act doesn't quite have the intended emotional impact, but Coppola's attention to detail, from costumes to design, is pitch perfect.
