This low-budget thriller is based on Paul Capon's novel, Murder at Shinglestrand. The premise is decent enough, as writer Griffith Jones goes to bed in his London flat, only to wake in a strange cottage, with a gun in his hand and his wealthy cousin dead in the kitchen. When a pair of stranded female walkers seek sanctuary, Jones manages to convince one of them, Patricia Laffan, of his innocence. But her friend tells the police and Jones has to rely on crime reporter Bruce Seton to clear his name. Director Tony Young makes effective use of the locations, particularly around a houseboat at Chertsey. But the script keeps introducing and discarding characters at a bewildering rate, among them a furniture forger, a devious charlady, and a Wild West music-hall performer. Conveniently, Seton's journo knows a bit too much about the case's more obscure details. But he and Jones bond well, although Laffan too easily blunders into a trap that features the film's stand-out player. But to identify them would ruin the big reveal.
