It was the only frontier left for mountaineers to cross: in 2021, the second-highest mountain in the world, K2 in Pakistan, had still never been climbed during the winter. This feature documentary follows the eforts of two rival climbing groups to get to the top first – and the worrying arrival of a third party, a commercial outfit that sold spots both to experienced climbers and to inexperienced influencers who were there to make content.
As cameras capture the beauty and the terrifying harshness of the terrain – death is very visibly close at hand at all times – a fable plays out about why humans push themselves to conquer extreme challenges, and the dangers of doing it for all the wrong reasons.
