David Parkinson

Decent but doltish insurance salesman Joseph Chambers (Clayne Crawford) embarks on a solo hunting trip he's ill-prepared for in this doom-laden drama. With his delusional displays of machismo, Joe is set up as a figure of fun, only for events to take a dark turn. Writer/director Robert Machoian (The Killing of Two Lovers) gives us plenty of notice that something momentous is coming, but it's what happens next that makes this Trumpist twist on Alfred Hitchcock's The Trouble With Harry (1955) so compelling and appalling. Crawford's character is alternately empathetic and pathetic, and the film reinforces how utterly out of his depth he is through its evocative use of cinematography, sound design and score.
