Picking up its story in January 1943, this is the second part of writer/director Antonin Baudry's sweeping dramatic portrait of French leader Charles de Gaulle during the Second World War. Taking its sub-title from a Paul Eluard poem written during the country's Nazi occupation, the film interweaves three narrative strands. We're shown the battlefield actions of General Leclerc (Niels Schneider) across Africa and France, the efforts of civil servant Jean Moulin (Félix Kysyl) to unify his homeland's disparate Resistance networks into a national movement, and the political struggles of De Gaulle himself (played by Simon Abkarian) to win over suspicious Allied leaders to his vision of French sovereignty. Though audiences will know broadly where this is all headed, with the country successfully liberated in summer 1944, the great virtue of the film is that it brings to life how complicated, risky and lonely the journey was for de Gaulle. Impressively photographed in widescreen, and credibly acted by its ensemble cast - including Simon Russell Beale as Churchill and Campbell Scott as FDR - this dynamic historical epic merits its combined five-hour running time.
