Summary

Psychological drama starring Saura Lightfoot Leon and Joseph Quinn. Eight-year-old Maria is taken away from her mother, who has a dangerous problem with hoarding, and placed into foster care. A decade later, Maria learns of her mum's death and begins to exhibit some alarming behaviour of her own. A budding romance with Michael, a previous occupant of her foster home who is back in town, offers some relief - but also risky encouragement.

James Mottram

A rebellious teenager and a philandering father-to-be front this startlingly brave British drama about grief and obsession. Maria (Lily-Beau Leach) is first seen as a young girl, living with her unhinged, junk-hoarding mother Cynthia (Hayley Squires). After events separate them, the story moves on a decade, with Maria (now played by Saura Lightfoot Leon) an unruly adolescent living with a foster mother (Samantha Spiro). When the older Michael (Stranger Things actor Joseph Quinn) comes to stay, he makes a play for Maria, despite being engaged to his pregnant girlfriend. An emotional rollercoaster of a film, writer/director Luna Carmoon's debut truly throws everything against the wall. Not all of it sticks, including one very bizarre scene involving the consuming of a rather taboo substance. But newcomer Lightfoot Leon gives an electric performance as the older Maria opposite a muscular Quinn, who channels the energy of a young Gary Oldman. Spiro and Mona Lisa star Cathy Tyson also bring pedigree to a story that energetically explores the fragile nature of the human psyche.
