Calum Baker

Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon do their best to enjoy a road trip across the North of England in the feature-length cut of their acclaimed first BBC TV series. Playing exaggerated versions of themselves, the comics drive from London to Lancashire to Sunderland and back, sampling restaurants for a travelogue series to be published in the Observer. Perpetual bachelor Steve is suffering a mid-career slump, trying to break Hollywood and become a serious actor while haunted by the spectre of his famous character, Alan Partridge. Meanwhile, Rob is enjoying married life with a new baby, not to mention his growing popularity as a light entertainer. Director Michael Winterbottom and his two stars - who improvise their dialogue - skilfully plumb this set-up for subtleties, finding surprising depth among the gags and celebrity impressions. Essentially, it's a character study into two ageing men so desperate to chase laughs that they can hardly switch off, and the dynamic loses nothing in a version that's 20 minutes shorter yet more contained and immersive than the six-episode series. When Winterbottom isn't sitting back to let his actors bicker over the food, he expertly maintains the mood with a series of breathtaking countryside vistas. A gem of British TV, certainly; but it's a gem in its cinematic form, too.
