Romcom clichés are ripped to shreds in this beautifully judged comedy horror from writer/director Caroline Lindy. Aspiring Broadway actor Laura (Melissa Barrera) is unceremoniously ditched by her playwright boyfriend Jacob (Edmund Donovan) following her cancer surgery. Returning to her childhood home, she cries her way through box after box of tissues, before being reunited with the monster in her closet (Tommy Dewey), a hirsute and tetchy man-beast with an appealingly artistic soul, whom she begins to fall for. Despite the obvious awkwardness of the situation, Laura also auditions for Jacob's new play and is eventually hired as understudy for the lead (Meghann Fahy), a part originally written for her. Your Monster is an awful lot of fun as it milks the potential of a very odd couple, balancing its sweet and sinister elements skilfully and benefitting from a sensational lead performance from Barrera (2022's Scream). She shares great chemistry with the charismatic Dewey, shows superb comic timing, and goes from delicate understatement to dead-eyed derangement with aplomb.
