Colin Firth and Jim Broadbent give heart-rending performances in this brilliant adaptation of Blake Morrison's memoir about his dying father. As the pair grasp for the right words in the older man's final hours, long-held resentments are revealed in flashback. Young actor Matthew Beard more than holds his own playing the teenage Blake against a formidable Broadbent. The veteran actor dazzles as the charismatic yet sometimes insufferable dad, who is consistently (albeit inadvertently) chipping away at his son's fragile ego. Director Anand Tucker manages to find comedy in these minor indignities, including a camping trip that culminates with father and son waking up in the middle of a river. But it's the discovery of his dad's marital infidelity that gives weight to Blake's grievances. An acutely observed script and moving performances keep things from descending into cliché, and while the tragic ending is inevitable, it has an undeniable power.
