A young, Black locksmith answers a late-night call that ends with him killing a Nazi gang member in this edgy, French-language crime thriller. With Black Lives Matter riots raging in Brussels, Mady (Jonathan Feltre) tries to keep his head down and go about his job. But when a girl tricks him into breaking into the apartment of a racist gangster, Mady winds up stabbing the guy in the neck, while the girl legs it with the dirty money he was babysitting. And that's just the start of Mady's escalating misfortunes. While the plot may sound pure Guy Ritchie, the style here is different and refreshing. The feature film directing debut of Michiel Blanchart, it's neo-noir given a gritty, social-realist twist. But don't mistake that for meaning it's humourless or preachy - there's plenty of wit and dark humour here, and even some fanciful (and surprisingly effective, given the lean budget) action. But rather than coming across as John Wick-style superhuman fighters, the characters are desperate, unskilled, opportunist brawlers in a recognisably real, if slightly heightened, world.
