Summary

Crime drama starring Vanessa Kirby and Jennifer Jason Leigh. Lynette works several jobs to try and prevent her disabled brother and deadbeat mother being evicted from their family home. When the latter uses $25,000 of rent money to buy a car, a distraught Lynette has to contact some of her former underworld accomplices to try and replace the cash overnight, setting in motion a series of increasingly fraught encounters.

Vanessa Kirby stars in this visceral drama as a young woman who has to find $25,000 overnight or face eviction from the house she shares with her disabled brother and deadbeat mother. With time running out she trawls the seedy neighbourhoods of an underworld she thought she had left behind, sparking a chain of events during which she has to confront her shady past and its unsavoury characters. Based on a novel by musician turned author Willy Vlautin, this is a grim portrait of desperate people struggling to escape the poverty trap. Director Benjamin Caron frames his locations (in Vlautin's home town of Portland, Oregon) in dark, bluish hues that accentuate the sombreness of life on the wrong side of the tracks. It's an uncomfortable watch at times, but worth it for the powerful performances of Kirby, steely and determined but with vulnerability lurking beneath the surface, and Jennifer Jason Leigh as the parent whose behaviour only compounds the family's problems. This is an unflinching examination of how economic hardship can derail even the most well-meaning of people.
