Investigative journalist Shiori Ito directs and narrates a compelling documentary about her own rape ordeal at the hands of one of Japan's most high-profile political reporters. Wading through conspiracies and cover-ups, she asks questions of a culture and society where women are often treated as second-class citizens, and police are routinely callous in their response to victims of sex crimes. Ito's initial accusations are met with online abuse, but she emerges as a figurehead of Japan's #MeToo movement, her personal experiences prompting others to come forward. It's an extraordinary piece of detective work, backed up by shocking CCTV footage and damning police files - the black box of the title refers to her own case, quickly closed by the authorities. An uneasy watch at times, but a testament to one woman's courage and determination to fight not just her own corner but that of potentially thousands more.
