It's full-on role-reversal time in the fourth instalment of the rebooted action franchise, which is set several hundred years after the events of War for the Planet of the Apes (2017). Apes are now the dominant intelligent life form on Earth while humans are rarely seen, speechless savages. When a warlike party of apes burns down a chimpanzee village and enslaves the chimps they haven't killed, only Noa, the son of the chief, escapes. He sets out on a quest to rescue his captured clan, a mission that soon uncovers dark secrets about the reality of this new world order. A new director/writer team at the helm (The Maze Runner's Wes Ball and Avatar: the Way of Water's Josh Friedman) give the franchise a new vibe that borrows heavily from fantasy film tropes. It's a decent enough romp with spectacular action and engaging characters, but lighter and fluffier than its immediate predecessors, with a formulaic, episodic plot. Late in the day, though, it becomes more interesting with some surprising last-minute world-building that seemingly sets up further sequels.
