A mother goes to extremes to protect her junkie daughter in this taut thriller from Michael Pearce, director of British psychodrama Beast (2017). Julianne Moore stars as Kate, a divorcee who runs a failing horse ranch in Pennsylvania. Troubled offspring Claire (Sydney Sweeney) has been in and out of rehab, but things get worse when she falls foul of a dealer (Domhnall Gleeson), who demands $10,000 for a missing stash. To save her, the vulnerable and lonely Kate is willing to do anything, even break the law - a series of steps that leads to a gripping finale. Scripted by Brad Ingelsby (Mare of Easttown) and directed with impressive economy by Pearce, this old-fashioned, bear-trap narrative clamps satisfyingly around its selfish (or foolish) protagonists. Moore is a sturdy presence, while a lank-haired Gleeson is chilling as her antagonist. Although it's a shame that Euphoria's Sweeney is underused, supporting players Fiona Shaw and Kyle MacLachlan bring true quality. The plot does hinge on at least one slightly improbable discovery, but this terrific tale will still ensnare to the very end.
