David Parkinson

Author Koji Suzuki's bestseller about a cursed video tape that kills all who watch it has spawned franchises in both its native Japan and Hollywood. Director Hideo Nakata was the first to adapt the source material and structures his film like a diary, as a female journalist (Nanako Matsushima) investigates what caused the sudden deaths of her niece and friends. The plot resembles an old-fashioned detective story, but its emphasis on the paranormal recalls both David Cronenberg's brand of body horror and The X-Files. Artfully mixing footage formats to achieve a visual texture commensurate with both the tone of the story and Kinji Kawai's eerie score, Nakata inexorably builds the suspense right up to the chilling climax.
