Kevin Harley

Pitched somewhere between Elf and the live-action movie The Smurfs, this fish-out-of-water fantasy is amiable if only lightly sketched. Living in a storybook world, Harold (Zachary Levi) has a magic purple crayon that brings his drawings to life. When his narrator's voice suddenly disappears, Harold and his friend Moose (Lil Rel Howery) enter our world, where the young Mel (Benjamin Bottani) joins their quest to find the missing creator. Riffing playfully on the Crockett Johnson source book, director Carlos Saldanha (Ferdinand) has fun with Harold's etchings and Levi's Will Ferrell-style performance. Sadly, Zooey Deschanel (as Mel's mum) and Tanya Reynolds (as Harold's mischievous pal Porcupine) are desperately under-served by the material, and get lost as the low-stakes plot pinballs messily between set pieces. The result often falls flat, but spry pacing and a scene-stealing Jemaine Clement offer diverting, kid-friendly entertainment, even if the script needed more time on the drawing board.
