Steve Carell's reformed villain Gru returns for more japes in this fourth instalment of the hit animated series. This time, he and his family are given new identities and shipped off to a sleepy suburban backwater to escape the attentions of vengeful prison-escapee Maxime Le Mal (Will Ferrell) - a nemesis from Gru's school days. But before long, Gru is blackmailed into helping his new neighbours' teenage daughter pull off a criminal heist, threatening to put his loved ones in danger again. The shift to small-town anonymity breathes fresh life into the familiar domestic elements, while a parallel plot involving select Minions gaining X-Men-like superpowers ups the slapstick ante. It makes for a busy 94 minutes, but the storylines are navigated with confidence, and the film ticks all the right boxes for longstanding fans of the franchise. Meanwhile, the gag rate is higher than ever, never more so than when Carell and Ferrell team up to cover a prescient pop song that gives viewers glimpses of foes from the earlier films.
