When this TV movie first aired in 1974, the world was a more innocent place. American citizens still implicitly trusted their government and would have been alarmed by the idea that special agents would coerce four pilots into denying their close encounter with a UFO had ever taken place. In the 21st century, however, this brusquely brisk mystery looks creaky and clumsy, as it employs archive footage, stentorian narration, and emphatic time checks to ramp up the tension in a story that suffers from insufficient context and stick-figure characterisation. Bringing determined decency to a poorly written part, Glenn Ford tracks down the crew of a radar-testing plane, who have been detained for debriefing on an abandoned air base after fighter jets vanish while investigating suspicious blips on a scanner screen. David Soul is sweatily effective as the pilot cracking under the strain, while Guy Stockwell makes a hissable by-the-book chief spook. But this set-bound gab-fest is underwhelmingly unpersuasive.
