Summary

Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh reprises her role as Emperor Philippa Georgiou from Star Trek: Discovery in a standalone feature film spin-off from the TV series written by Craig Sweeny. Georgiou is recruited to join a secret division of Starfleet called Section 31, which has a remit to protect the United Federation of Planets and everything it stands for. She joins a ragtag team that includes Alok (Omari Hardwick), Fuzz (Sven Ruygrok) and shape shifter Quasi (Sam Richardson). In pursuit of justice, Georgiou must confront the sins of her past and in some cases, pay for them dearly

Back when Michelle Yeoh first played Emperor Philippa Georgiou in TV's Star Trek: Discovery, her schedule wasn't as packed as it is today. Yet despite the recent boost to her career following an Academy Award win, she's still found time to reprise the role in this bombastic feature-length outing. The story finds the ruthless Georgiou pressganged into joining a secret division of Starfleet on a race-against-time mission. What follows is a noisy, largely charmless affair which jettisons the optimistic ideals and iconography of Star Trek in favour of a grungy aesthetic and a bog-standard sci-fi plot about a destructive weapon being put to ill use. There are fleeting moments of soul-searching from Georgiou as she tries to reconcile with her past tyranny on a mirror universe version of Earth. But such concerns, along with a few stabs at humour by Georgiou's ragtag crew, are drowned out by the whizz-bang explosions, most of which scream across the screen without ever feeling truly spectacular.
