A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Terry Staunton

Elizabeth Banks stars in a serious medical drama as veteran surgeon Liz, who faces various challenges after allowing a younger, less experienced colleague to take over during a complicated operation. When an error ultimately results in the patient's death, Liz has to contend with grieving parents, scandal-chasing press, questions about her leadership, and all manner of debate involving the apportioning of blame. The premise wouldn't be out of place in an episodic hospital drama like ER or Grey's Anatomy, but writer/director Christine Jeffs, working from a 2019 novel by Carl Shuker, avoids typical TV melodrama and focuses more on the frustrating bureaucracy and scapegoating that routinely follows such tragedies. This makes for a wordy, often cold film but one that's not without emotion. Banks projects the human heart of the story, steadfastly supportive of the people with whom she works while also trying to soothe the pain of the patient's family, in contrast to the callousness of Simon McBurney's hospital bigwig more concerned with circling the wagons and damage limitation.
