A classy cast enliven this dour Irish thriller from debut director Phil Sheerin. Charlie Murphy and Anson Boon play mother and son Elaine and Tom, a downtrodden pair who, lacking better options, move into Elaine's grandfather's farm in rural Ireland, following his death. Before long, Tom is drawn into the drama of their neighbour (Emma Mackey), a troubled young woman harbouring a dark secret, whose father (Michael McElhatton) is more than a little menacing. Adopting a muted, chilly palette, The Winter Lake is a largely unflashy affair with ominous flash-forwards and sporadic moments of style. The film doesn't make enough of the treacherous lake (or "turlach") of the title, and the characters aren't particularly fleshed out, even if Boon is suitably moody and conflicted. But while the dialogue is uninspired, the plot is an interesting exercise in noir-ish duplicity, and culminates in a tense showdown.
