The tight bond between two Jamaican-Canadian brothers sits at the heart of this lyrical yet devastating drama from writer/director Clement Virgo. The imposing Francis (Aaron Pierre) looks out for the younger, quieter Michael (Lamar Johnson), while their single mother (Marsha Stephanie Blake) works overtime to make ends meet. Yet as violent tensions simmer in their low-income area of Scarborough, Ontario, anxieties for Francis's safety intensify. Adapting David Chariandy's novel, Virgo cuts between different points in the brothers' histories to explore the depths of their relationship. Johnson and Pierre suggest decades of fraternal feeling with their soulful performances, while Blake is revelatory as their tough but tender mum. Her worries are intensified by fitful bursts of local gang and police violence, which shroud the film in dread. Set to an expressive soundtrack, this is an emotionally powerful yet intimate portrait of Black masculinity under duress.
