A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Kevin Harley

An actor of charm and dexterity, Ke Huy Quan deserves a more fully developed vehicle than this fitfully fun but slapdash action lark. Quan plays Marvin, a realtor who adores his job. But a previous life as a hitman for his crime lord brother catches up with Marvin when assassins attack him, demanding to know the whereabouts of his former partner-in-crime Rose (Ariana DeBose). At best, director (and former fight co-ordinator) Jonathan Eusebio crafts the film as a knowing tribute to his irrepressible lead. Quan's warmth and comic timing endear, and the gentle scenes with his Goonies co-star Sean Astin (as Marvin's workplace mentor) are touching. When the brawling begins, the Jackie Chan-ish scraps are cleverly choreographed, though script and plot soon let the side down. A strand about stolen money stirs little interest, while the quippy dialogue and cartoonish villains just reheat familiar, post-Tarantino leftovers. With DeBose and various romantic subplots awkwardly sidelined, Love Hurts is a sore case of squandered potential, running out of steam long before its taut 83 minutes are up.
