Set during the Battle of Bataan, 1942, this Second World War fight flick stars Scott Adkins (John Wick 4), whom action aficionados know from countless straight-to-streaming efforts. Based on a story by its star, the film follows British RAF pilot James Wright (Adkins) as he parachutes into the Philippines, only to be captured by Japanese forces. Under the command of cruel Lieutenant Colonel Ito (Peter Shinkoda), Wright and his fellow inmates are forced to take part in Bloodsport-style brawls, as they plot their way to freedom. Luckily, although born in Surrey, our hero grew up in Hong Kong, so his martial arts skills are more than a match for any challengers. While the combat scenes are suitably vicious, the prison drama is a little rote, with stock characters and cheesy lines. "Today you are victorious, but tomorrow you die," Ito tells Walker, before singularly failing to kill him at every opportunity. Perhaps that is the main problem here. Too silly to fully convince, but too serious to enjoy as escapism, it ends up stranded in movie no-man's land.
