Having playfully portrayed the coming of talkies in his Oscar-winning The Artist, Michel Hazanavicius casts his director's eye on another turbulent, if less sweeping, moment in cinema. The focus is on French auteur Jean-Luc Godard (played by credible lookalike Louis Garrel), who lost interest in narrative movies in the late 1960s and proceeded to embrace more radical film-making techniques. The revolutionary spirit of 1968 spurs him on, but it proves to be an awkward transition for the director, and one that alienates all of those around him - not least his youthful second wife Anne Wiazemsky (Stacy Martin), on whose memoir this film is loosely based. The potentially dry subject matter is given a wry telling by Hazanavicius, whose film brims with the signature style of his subject, employing bold, colourful intertitles, showboating tracking shots and fourth-wall-breaking asides. He's also not afraid to gently mock Godard (the routine breaking of his glasses is one of the funnier gags) or present him as petulant and politically naive. It's an irreverent approach that lends the film a broader appeal, but there's no denying that ardent cinephiles will find more here than the casual viewer.
