A star rating of 3 out of 5.
Adrian Turner
This first sound version of Robert Louis Stevenson's ripping yarn is directed by Victor Fleming, who later made Gone with the Wind with all the resources of MGM behind him. Wallace Beery is well cast as Long John Silver (though not, perhaps, as memorably as Robert Newton in 1950), Lionel Barrymore is Billy Bones and young Jackie Cooper plays "Aaargh, Jim lad". More than 60 years on, a certain amount of woodworm has infested the foremasts, not to mention Long John's leg, so what was always a rather ponderous adventure may seem even more so today, especially to its intended audience of children now weaned on CGI.
