Summary

Psychological sci-fi drama starring Elizabeth Olsen, Himesh Patel and Alicia Vikander. In a future world where resources are finite, couples who want children are assessed for their suitability. Mia and Aaryan are hopeful that they will pass, but when Virginia arrives to question them and inspect their relationship, her methods prove to be unorthodox and unsettling.

The black volcanic sands of Tenerife provide a stark backdrop for this austere, ideas-driven, faintly Pinteresque sci-fi drama. Elizabeth Olsen and Himesh Patel play a childless couple put through their paces in a brutal seven-day assessment designed to determine if they would make good parents. Alicia Vikander plays their appraiser, a woman whose battery of tests rapidly move from the obvious (parental skills and aptitude) to the extreme. One minute she's stone-faced, the next flirtatious, before throwing tantrums while play-acting as a toddler. It's all done without much in the way of special effects or visual invention, and relies on the actors for impact. Olsen and Vikander are both superb but Patel is slightly left behind by a script more interested in why women want children at all. If it had been 20 minutes shorter, the film would be a lot better, but this is still a cracking feature debut by director Fleur Fortune.
