The summer of 2023 very much belonged to Blur, with a number one album in the charts and their biggest gigs to date, headlining two nights at Wembley Stadium. The formula for this documentary about the band deviates little from No Distance Left to Run (2009) and New World Towers (2015), which also saw the members coming back together to muse on their legacy and bash out the hits to adoring fans. However, a successful outcome seems less assured this time around, with singer Damon reeling from a relationship break-up, drummer Dave injuring his knee and bassist Alex habitually hungover. The album The Ballad of Darren itself is steeped in sadness, but during its recording and the live rehearsals those raw wounds begin to heal and fraternal bonds are reaffirmed, with Damon and guitarist Graham's visit to their old school in Colchester both touching and very funny. Now in their mid-50s, Blur may be older, paunchier and generally more tired-looking than the fresh-faced youngsters featured in archive footage, but it's reassuring that they can still deliver the goods live, with Popscene and Song 2 among the raucous crowd-pleasers. Any tensions and anxieties are put aside in the air-punching finale, in what amounts to a celebratory victory lap for this most beloved of British bands.
