Spirits of the forest battle cold-hearted humans bent on exploiting their magical resources in this vibrant Ukrainian animated fantasy. Forest dwellers and humans have feared and avoided each other since a terrible war years before, but then tender-hearted, green-haired woodland sprite Mavka (voiced by Laurie Hymes) falls for hunky human musician Lucas (Eddy Lee). That's handy for entitled villain Kylina (Sarah Natochenny), who wants what only the forest can supply - eternal youth - and she's prepared to manipulate the pair's forbidden love to get it. Mavka's simplistic eco message will be familiar to fans of Ferngully and Avatar, while the love story is pure Disney princess territory. Despite these quibbles, the film proves joyously funny and hugely engaging, populated by charming characters and adorably quirky creatures - kids will want a kittyfrog of their own after watching it.
