Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba take centre stage in this wordy but wondrous adult fairy tale. Based on the AS Byatt short story The Djinn in the Nightingale's Eye, the film stars Swinton as Dr Alithea Binnie, a divorced, solitary academic. At a conference in Istanbul, she starts seeing visions. "My imagination's getting the better of me," she says, and soon, she encounters a life-size Djinn (Elba), who offers her three wishes. The shrewd Binnie refuses, believing Djinns to be mischievous, but instead listens to his yearningly romantic story - one of imprisonment over three millennia. Directed by George Miller, the Australian film-maker behind Mad Max: Fury Road, this is just as visually splendid as that desert-set epic, with the Djinn's flashbacks delivering us to an exotic past of sultans and concubines. At times the story meanders, and the toing and froing to Alithea's hotel room frustrates. But this is an entrancing tale of love, loss, and loneliness, with Swinton and Elba finding emotional depth in the melancholic finale.
