Julia Roberts is a Yale philosophy professor caught in the crossfire of a sexual abuse case in this muddled drama. The Erin Brockovich star plays Alma Imhoff, a respected academic approached by a PhD student with alarming news. Maggie (The Bear's Ayo Edebiri), whose parents are wealthy donors to the university, claims that Alma's colleague Hank (Andrew Garfield) assaulted her. But did he? That Maggie is Black, operating in a world dominated largely by straight, white cisgender men, adds to the complex dynamic. So begins a misguided polemic, scripted by Nora Garrett, scored by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross and directed by Luca Guadagnino (Challengers, Call Me by Your Name). Dealing with abuse, privilege and entitlement, Roberts turns in strong, considered work as Alma, who initially refuses to get involved before unravelling, and an almost-unrecognisable Chloë Sevigny provides a solid supporting performance as a campus colleague. But this feels like an echo of better films, including cancel culture tale Tár (2022) and Danish drama The Hunt (2012), adding little new to the conversation.
