Calum Baker

SpongeBob Squarepants's diminutive nemesis, Sheldon J Plankton, gets a musical spin-off feature that starts well but runs out of nautical nonsense by the final act. Plankton (voiced, as ever, by Mr Lawrence) fails once again to steal the secret Krabby Patty recipe and thereby take over the world. After 25 years of such failure, Plankton's long-suffering computer/wife Karen (Jill Talley) goes rogue and decides to do things herself, developing a giant, magnetic body and a split personality. Can a trip down memory lane save the day? As with many similar TV-cartoon features, the ensuing plot is thinly stretched over 87 minutes. It's certainly not helped by its narrative similarities to the far superior Sponge out of Water film from 2015, which also saw Plankton reluctantly teaming up with his irrepressible absorbent neighbour. Still, the world of Bikini Bottom offers up its usual sprinkling of inspired gags, while Flight of the Conchords's Bret McKenzie contributes some fine songs alongside veteran composer Mark Mothersbaugh. The standout sequence on both counts is a typically SpongeBob interlude depicting Plankton's childhood: an upbeat hoedown number that accompanies 2D, black and white, 1930s-style animation. It's just a shame the rest of the film isn't quite as witty.
