James Mottram

Squid Game star Lee Jung-jae fronts this propulsive, and sometimes preposterous, political action thriller set in 1980s South Korea. Lee, who also makes his directorial debut, plays a member of the Korean Central Intelligence Agency during a time of authoritarian rule. When the KCIA discovers that there is a North Korean mole in the ranks, he is entrusted to root out the spy while also being investigated by a rival agent (Jung Woo-sung). Lee shows a flair for staging intense set pieces, and the film rarely pauses for breath between street shoot-outs and car chases. Unfortunately, any subtlety becomes lost in the emphasis on fast-paced action thrills over historical insight. Character motivations are left ambiguous, especially when a subplot to assassinate the South Korean president muddies the waters. Jung and Lee are charismatic leads, but a lack of restraint prevents Hunt from fulfilling its potential.
