Twenty years before The Silence of the Lambs, Jonathan Demme made his industry debut by co-writing this movie for exploitation king Roger Corman, directed by Demme's old advertising friend Joe Viola. It is a tale of rival biker gangs squaring off in a California ghost town, with a bunch of largely ineffectual hippies caught in between. Scott Glenn is the good-guy gang leader who is so laid back you wonder what he's been smoking. Gary Busey does what he can as the hippie in the middle, while Charles Dierkop plays the other gang leader as a version of Charles Manson. Dierkop's performance is the standout, but Viola's direction is terrible - he gave up to concentrate on writing. For all its faults, the film does catch a moment and bottles the uncertainty of West Coast counterculture in the wake of the Swinging Sixties.
