Before he buckled under the pressures of showbusiness, Oliver Reed could swash and swagger with the best of them. He's on form as a renegade swordsman with an eye for the ladies in this period drama from Hammer set during the English Civil War. Swordfights abound as sadistic Cromwellian colonel Lionel Jeffries discovers his daughter has Royalist sympathies. There's capable support from Jack Hedley and June Thorburn, but writer/director John Gilling was on surer ground with later horror films such as The Plague of the Zombies.
